What is an EORI number?

EORI stands for Economic Operators Registration and Identification and is used for organisations and people trading within the EU. Following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union on 1st January 2021, businesses and people wishing to trade within the EU must use an Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI) as an identification number in all customs procedures when exchanging information with customs administrations.

Having one common type of identification number across the EU is more efficient, both for economic operators and customs authorities. It is also more efficient for statistical purposes and security purposes.

Why do I need an EORI number?

You will need an EORI number if you:

  • Appoint someone to deal with customs for you
  • Make customs declarations
  • Use customs systems, such as the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system and the Import Control System Northern Ireland (ICS NI)
  • Apply for a customs decision

You also need an EORI number if you move goods:

  • Between Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Isle of Man and any other country (including the EU)
  • Between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • Between Great Britain and the Channel Islands
  • Between Northern Ireland and countries outside the EU

What type of EORI number do I need?

The type of EORI number you need and where you get it from depends on where you’re moving goods to and from. You may need more than one.

If you do not have the right EORI number, you may have delays at customs and increased costs. For example, your goods may have to be stored until you get an EORI. It is therefore essential to use the EU EORI validation checker.

Automated Export compliance using the EORI SOAP Web Service

BPA Platform provides you with the ability to automate EORI number validation by integrating your ERP system and other business systems and applications with the EORI SOAP web service. In order to automatically validate EORI numbers using BPA Platform, you will need to integrate with the EU’s EORI web service, which will return the official exchange information for a given EORI number. The EORI web service is a SOAP-based web service. BPA Platform’s Web Service Connector Tool (WSCT) is used to define the web service based on the EORI WSDL provided by the European Commission.

EORI operation to return the confirmation data

The EORI web service contains one operation "validateEORI". Passing a valid EORI number to this operation (as an example "IE2025292W") will return the official EU operating company name and address to ensure this is correct for the customs exchange throughout the EU.

Once you have used BPA Platform to integrate with the EORI web service, the returned data can then be used within BPA Platform to update business systems, such as an ERP system. This data will then be used as the official address for the purpose of any customs documentation when sending or dealing with any logistics within the EU.

A maximum 10 numbers can be sent by request and a maximum of 100 requests can be sent per second.
